My friends back home got caught for smoking weed. They have a court date for in 2 weeks. (NJ, US)

I have no idea if this is the right place for this. My friends got caught in a car in a parking lot, and they were arrested yesterday. They got booked, processed, spent a couple hours in jail, and then they were let go. They have court soon, and none of them have any idea what to do at this point. Maximum fine is $1000 and maximum jail time of 6 months. Do you have any advice for them?
