Did skins being added to CS:GO make it sky rocket in players as much as I believe it did?

What the title says. I believe that the reason it got so many players as it did was because of skins.

Sites like CSGO lounge taking advantage of skins and letting you bet them(as toxic as viewers got) also helped the Comp scene.

Thoughts?
