How can I treat acute epididymitis not caused by STDs without using fluoroquinolones?

I have suspected epididymitis and was prescribed cipro. I read about people having bad side effects using these types of antibiotics like peripheral neuropathy. I took one pill of cipro and it seemed to help the scrotum pain bit I started getting joint pain so I stopped taking it and then was prescribed Doxycycline. After doing researched I found out these aren't effective against bacteria caused by enteric organisms since I don't have stds. Which antibiotic should I take and how can I treat the fluro toxicity?
