Self-Portrait

fractured glass coats steel-eyed glare
coldly piercing matted blonde hair
near-perfect nose - curves gently down
porcelain lips - fight constant frown
 

white shirt unwashed on dirt-stained skin
tattered black coat - to shield all within
frail neck is bowed by weight of the mind
as a nervous twitch - brings rare glance behind
 

hands sore and blackened - reward of his trade
hug firmly, his sleeves - with cuffs torn and frayed
no shape from waist down - smudged, hole-laden jeans
hang loose from his legs - sole-clung by their seams
 

his shoes though, brand new - he bought them today
gray chucks conceal feet - remind him to stay
for if shoes, old and broken, are easily replaced
then too, could this monster-turned man be erased
