"New" player just leveled 1-80, and holy is the leveling good.

[Question]

Just started a new account (since my old one from release was apparently compromised) to give the game that I once thought showed promise, an actual chance.

Finished leveling a warrior yesterday, and holy was the leveling good. Especially the personal story, the one and only time I actually was caring about what I was doing and why in a game. The rest off the leveling I did was good as well(mainly exploring, events and hearts), but I just had to push for the personal story every 10th level.

A question though, does the story have any replay value? There is a lot of choices a long the way, but I guess the outcome and the main aspects off the story stays the same?(without spoiling)

Considering using the level 80 boost to run through the story with another profession and make all choices different. Max level content seems a bit daunting / demanding, so I probably won't do to much off that.

The replay value is in choosing the different choices. You can see the choices here https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Personal_story#Personal_Story_chapters

I like some of them better than others, my personal favourites:

Asura - Infinity Ball

Sylvari - White Stag + Act with wisdom

Human - Missed Opportunity (you get to beat up Logan!)

Norn - Assault on the Hill (requires you to join Vigil)

Orders - Order of Whispers

Helping hands - Skritt

Helping hands - Hylek

Pact - Whisper's plan

You're right that the end result is the same though!

Helping hands - Skritt

Agree. I find Skritt extremely adorable with their chittering over shinies. And one particular part of the Skritt racial-help missions made me unexpectedly sad :(

Hylek is good too IMO. That last battle gets intense.

Actually chose Skritt, funny creatures.

The way they spoke reminded me off Yoda, until he suddenly became smarter because there was more Skritt around(funny that they pointed it out, probably wouldn't have noticed if not :P).

It does the best to set you up to fight Zhaitan in the next arc. I can recommend it :) - Added to my original post

Gosh, yeah. The Infinity Ball story is my favorite. Though I wouldn't be lying if I said that the Statics and Dynamics plots were pretty okay too.

I think your enjoyment of the leveling journey was in part due to the way you subconsciously ordered these things...

(mainly exploring, events and hearts),

You put hearts last and exploring first. Everyone I've ever seen complain about the leveling in this game focus on the hearts and it boooooorreeesss them. Come to post like this where it's clear you focused on the dynamic events/exploration and, voila!, the tune is very different.

edit: Added a word in the first sentence.

Yeah, the hearts are just "OK", they are mostly very repetitive, but at least they don't come with a massive wall of text that you have to read through to get an understanding off it. Events are way better as they often lead to other things if you stick around, loved when I actually got to do a heart while doing an event, made it a lot more meaningful.

The only events I didn't care anything for was most off the escort mission; walk slowly, kill some mobs, walk slowly, kill some mobs repeat X times.

Exploring is way fun as well, suddenly realized I was a completionist.

This game has very much awoken the completionist in me as well.

Couldn't agree more! And if you like the events that are actually chains of events, you should check out Orr, Dry Top, and the Silverwastes. If you have HoT, you're really going to like the meta-event chains. They're so much fun! Tangled Depths is my favorite!

Oh hell yeah. GW2 PvE levelling is actually fun, because of the level scaling, you'll never feel too bored in maps below your level so you can continue exploring and playing. I'm glad you're having fun.

The first 3 stages of the personal story (up to level 30) are racial-based. These are my favourite parts of the story, because of the variety in choices. Human, for example, can choose to be a Noble, a Street Rat or a Commoner. So you can run 3 human characters and experience a different starter story each time with different allies, enemies, plot lines. Good replay value, although the missions are a bit short.

After that, the racial storylines merge into one storyline for all characters, with some twists and turns along the way depending on what choices you make. But the end result/end mission is the same. Not gonna spoil, but I think it's quite exciting for a first-timer, although it quickly gets boring after the first time you do it. Racial storyline is much better for replay value.

You can use the 80 boost if you like, I boosted my Engie because I could not be bothered to level that class. It does give you Level 80 Exotic armor/weapons and has a trial mode for you to try out max level content and get a feel of the class, though, so you can safely use the trial and cancel it if you think you're not ready.

Really enjoyed that I could finish a zone, even though I had "outleveled" it .

Now every zone was new and exciting, but there was a couple of zones I am more likely to revisit then others. There is even a lot of zones I haven't visited yet.

Not like in WoW(which I am used to), where when you reach X level you have to go X zone that everyone hates.

I see that there is a general agreement that there is most replay value in the first chapters, so I probably just stick to them for now.

lucatri.7945 [TAL]•

Yup. If you ever find a zone too annoying or difficult, you can simply hop in one of the lower-level maps, where gameplay can still be enjoyable but not so easy that you one-shot mobs.

I don't think you can replay the personal story chapters on a character that's already done them - like, if you're a human who finished the L10 story, you can't restart it to give yourself a new "life origin story". If you're f2p, you only have 2 character slots, so you only get to see 2 possible story combinations.

Luckily that makes for an interesting experience every time when you level a new alt, but if you don't have enough characters, you might not be able to experience everything.

1
SlampenOP•

Wording, what I meant is that I'll probably only play the first few chapters on potential new characters :)

Anyways, I bought HoT so I got probably more character slots then I need :)

lucatri.7945 [TAL]•

Awesome, hope you enjoy HoT as well as you're enjoying vanilla!

I actually gave up doing personal story past level 40 on new characters. You get a black lion chest key after the first mission of 40, so I at least do that one, it's very short as you just have to watch a cutscene. But the rest get too boring :P

Don't be afraid of the max level content! Its actually a really nice gradual curve up. Especially if you have Heart of Thorns. Just don't expect to be able to wander around the map without other people at first. In HoT the open world itself can be dangerous. But it is stunning and so much fun to glide around!

P.s. join a random guild. If people aren't immediately friendly and welcoming, then drop it and try again. Best choice I ever made :). (Also, consider joining AGI, because they are the nicest)

3
SlampenOP•

Yeah, bought HoT and haven't actually checked out any off the content provided by it yet, so have to make it worth the money.

Did join a guild, but it seems like it was newly created and there isn't many members, definitely on the to-do list .

Story has few "parts" which differ depending on your choices.

The first one depends on your race and chocies during character creation.

Then there is choosing the order (whispers, vigil and priory) which influence another few story instances while also giving you access to specific merchants where you can buy armor and weapons from each order.

Somewhere along the way there is another meaningfull choice which I don't remember.

You get achievements for each path you take so if you are achi hunter that may be a reason for you. Also having all 3 order merchants unlocked is nice for the sake of fashion wars

I don't want to discourage you but as soon as you reach Trahearne "your" personal story is over and you do exactly the same. prior to that you have different things to do because of your Race. I played every race Until meeting Trahearne then I stopped because its always the same even though you have choices, but these choices don't matter because it's only 1-2 missions that have and impact because of this but you still get back to the main storyline. (I think there is even inconsistency sometimes where NPCs gets introduced a few times and they act like they never met before). Thats at least my opinion.

Max level content isn't that hard in Core Tyria, HoT on the other hand will be a lot tougher.
