I Once Saw A God
I once saw a god
A statue beautiful
But beset by prayers
His eyes were doleful.
He stood unyielding
In his abode of bells
Humans warred before his eyes
To get a place near the rails.
And as the priests showered him
With flowers and milk
He cried in dismay
When he saw the shining silks.
He flinched
Tried to dodge
But his stone prison
Didn't let him an inch bulge.
Hours went on
And came the night
The worshippers relented
Over was the daily fight.
Soon the hopeful eyes lifted
And saw my wry smile
The young immortal god blanched
And was almost senile.
One day the temple fell
And died all the beggars outside
Gone was the god forever
To another temple beggar-side.
