Sonnet from the Unworthy Lover (still trying to figure out an ending couplet)
SONNET FROM THE BARREN HEART
My love, what treasure do you seek in me?
What paltry ore this fickle heart conceals!
Beneath your gaze, this stubborn stone reveals
mere veins of copper, dulled with verdigris.
What need drives you to excavate my heart,
when yours, a cavern heav'ly weighed with gold,
contains such wealth, beyond what mine may hold,
that shares its worth and greater grace imparts?
Yet you don't leave your laden wealth below,
but disinter it for your lover's sake:
the love you give, and hope that I will take
to mint the shining currency I owe.
My love, what riches may in me be mined,
In truth, you stowed there first for me to find.
Edit: thanks to all of you for your suggestions! I was stuck on this thing for quite a while!
Special thanks to Lana!
