Ways to talk down tilters?

It's basically my worst nightmare, because I feel like it's the cause of 33% of my losses at 3.6k mmr: Your lanes are farming well, the networth is about even and everything is okay when your offlaner gets hit by a Mirana arrow and dies. That's completely fine, but then your midlaner chat wheels ">gg well played twice" and team chats "gg feeders I go jungle." Just an offlaner giving up first blood is a completely winnable scenario, but I don't know what to do when one of my team mates actively starts avoiding objectives and fights or even worse starts feeding.

So how do you win games like these? Is there something tilters want to hear that will make them try again? Is there a playstyle I can adopt that carries literal 4v5s?

Overwhelming positivity. "It sucks, but shit happens. It was just a lucky arrow. It's okay. It's just a single kill. We can handle this. What do you need? How can I help you out?"

If they don't shut up, mute. Don't tell them you're muting. That will tilt them further.

Yeah sometimes taking the focus off them can help, if they get arrowed they may feel like a bad player and if you can feel like maybe it's not them but rather an exceptional enemy that they couldn't possibly have avoided, that can help. e.g. "Holy shit that Mirana!"

I don't talk to them directly

All I do is talk in short phrases, specifically things that sound ESL

"Legion get back I distract"

"I will stun you help kill"

"I ward, please protect"

"No fights, just farm. Can't win right now"

Stuff like that

Nobody gets mad at the active support who constantly lets people know just how much he's doing, they only get mad at people who they think have done nothing. Active speaking, even not directly to them, helps a lot.

Risky. A lot of tilters will rage even more if they think you're a foreigner.

theyre just as likely to be 'the foreigner', whatever that is. i think ESL means more 'direct without embellishment.

The United States is by far the most populous English speaking DotA population. We have a lot of South American visitors on our servers, and it's a sore point for some people.

But what if the tilters come from SA?

2
pucklermuskau•

thats because they're racist fools. just because youre american, doesnt make you not a foreigner to the rest of us.

Don't respond to negative comments even just saying we still got this can produce a negative reaction. Instead make sure to compliment them when they do something good. >nice

In situations where your teammate freaks out specifically at another person on your team or yourself (for things like feeding, map awareness, buying wrong item, messing up stacks, etc), the thing I noticed which almost always diffuses the situation is admitting fault.

"Wow CM why were you even there, stop feeding, why are you so bad, blah blah blah"

"Yeah sorry, I was trying to ward and didn't pay attention to the map. I'll be more careful next time"

totally expecting CM to flame back "Oh, ok yeah just be more careful next time"

Almost always works I've noticed. Even if it's not completely the players fault, sometimes it's worth to sacrifice your pride for the emotional well being of your team.

I was playing offline as WW one game, and I was baby-sitting a PA.

I give up first blood early (IIRC, it was probably my fault for overextending) against an aggressive lane (Veno and Huskar or something) but the PA player was blocking my retreat accidentally when it happened.

Altercation goes like this:

Me: PA... ._____.

PA (voice): What, man, you got yourself killed, don't blame me.

Me: You blocked me when I was running. /sad

PA (voice): No I didn't!

At this point, I could have shut up, but I wanted to smooth things over instead. Means less tension later in the game.

Me (voice): Sorry, I think what happened is that I was running away, but you might have gotten in front of me by accident.

PA (voice): ...Oh. Okay, sorry.

Props to the player for accepting the apology. I don't think we could have won with a PA eternally on tilt.

It's the important part to owning up to what you did, though. He could have been on tilt for the rest of the game, even if I had said nothing after I died. If you own up to your mistakes, then not only are you defusing the situation, you're also teaching yourself that you could have done better.

And if the player in question still wants to act like a raging numpty, consider muting them. You've met them half-way with an olive branch, they chose to spit on your feet. No way to pacify them after that.

UNBR34K4BL3•

if they are potentially tilting because a teammate is flaming them, I suggest that they mute the teammate.

2
pucklermuskau•

thats less common, imo. whats more common is the op's situation: where one player gives in to that bitchy form of despair that comes on when they believe someone else on their team is 'noob'.

"I walked into THREE Mirana arrows earlier today, I know how you feel. But don't worry, we'll BOTH rip her a new one for that."

I express understanding, empathy, encouragement, and something amusing to get them back in the game.

If I get abuse in return (and I do 50% of the time), I mute them and play on.

I find that if you complement them they will just stop talking. I had a slark that was non stop crying into his mic and so I just said that he was a good player and sorry for feeding and that just made his day I guess and then we were able to get back to the actual game.

Bind chatwheel

Don't give up!

If possible:

You want to swap lanes?

Or x go top help y

Stop playing so agreessively we win this lategame

Smoking usually kind of forces people to commit with you cuz they think it's a waste of gold if they don't

I got an eye-opening match yesterday in this regard.

MatchID: https://yasp.co/matches/2388750884 (Spectre here)

0 min GG from Storm after bh got the bounty rune. Then he wrote in Team Chat "Tinker will now dominate mid, free farm, it's gg" after he tried to deward a sentry with right clicks in mid while having tangos and the enemy bh just ate his sentry. It get's better. While writing it he was first blooded, by said bh and tinker. After some minutes in game and some horrible support decisions (CM tries to help SS in mid while Earth stands in XP range on safe lane vs a solo ench) the CM joined the SS with sth. like "we are underleveled this is GG" and "Let them finish?".

The past days i red alot about PMA and leadership with Voice Chat. It was the first (international) ranked game after the read up and all i learned was challenged VERY hard by this. (Btw. i can be a very tilting and destructive player myself)

  1. I insta muted storm after the team chat, but not before saying "Chill, it's not the end of the world. Play on." and also muted CM after the write up. Don't mute all chat. Give players a chance, BUT insta mute them if they don't let go after the first "flame" and just forget about it. In this game i recognized the SS was talking shit after i muted him, cause the ES said "Can you STFU?". I just said: "Hey, if he is distracting u, mute him and play on."

  2. Don't give up. In any aspect. I wanted to lead this game cause i think @my mmr my knowledge is superior to my mates in a strategical sense. (but my decision making in fights and late game is severly lacking at this point). I just kept pointing out movements, objectives, improvments without going into micro managing these guys. "Ok we now can get the t1 bot, go for it." for example.

  3. Deal with the situation at hand. They don't go for objectives? Only try if you are sure u can deal with them without him. Else farm up. No need to feed 3 deaths cause you still tried. I think this is rly hard but rly important.

  4. If you do silly mistakes, acknowdlege them and say sorry, in advance. Very few ppl will flame sb. who acknowdlege their own mistakes before they are pointed out. Example from this game after i let the Jugg escape while totally capable of killing him under normal circumstances because i was in the skill menu and couldn't hit the damn button for skilling: "Sry guys i let the jugg escape, i was in the skill menu and messed up, my fault."

Overall (tl,dr):

Ignore negative feedback in anyway during game (time for improvement is after the game). Keep PMA. Keep leading the charge, BUT consider the situation at hand. Recognize mistakes of yourself and apologize.

Look at it this way: 3/5 ppl are listening and working together (i tipped the WR after the game cause i realized she never gave up and just played along), sometimes it carries over to the tilters and they change mid game.

sepy007•

Just ignore them and do your best.

cindel•

Sometimes I say "Don't worry man, we've got the late game" even when the draft dictates it's not true...

But it kind of is because even if you don't have a late game team it's DOTA and anything can happen.

1
TheGroceryman•

I've found it fun to start calling them out. "If you're gonna tilt, tilt hard, feed down mid, you're too scared to do it" "you can't even tilt at a 3k level, if you're so tilted right now man up and feed down mid"

I've actually found this approach to work on some of these people and also if you get a dedicated feeder sometimes it makes the game so clowny that the enemy can make a mistake big enough that your team can actually come back on. It's like weird reverse psychology.

1
Nighthaven-•

Just play the core roles yourself. Have you ever had a lost game where the CM rage quits? nope.

1
Radota2•

Offer to bribe them. "Hey if we win this game I'll commend you and give you a spare immortal". This works for me because they see the level 1000 compendium when we load in but it could work across the board regardless.

Edit : to clarify, while I will commend people if we win a game from behind like that, I won't give them items, especially if they've been flaming arseholes throughout the game in chat.

Be self-depreciating. Say "Yeah I suck, having a bad game." Be honest and non-combative. If you don't agree, don't reply. Apologize. If they're in your bracket, most likely you both belong there. It's extremely likely they have bad games where they fed and got raged at. Just say you're trying, can't all have perfect games. Ask if they always have flawless games. If they're still being salty after realizing they're not actually a 5k player then that's all you CAN do. I had this happen last night, a loss. Had the same salty player on my team. I was polite, wished them luck in the previous game. Well neither of us said anything to the other, they didn't say anything at all and I only spoke to the team. We won. I like to think they weren't salty that game because I diffused them, but I'm sure it helped that I actually played better that game

Most tilters are not really tilted, they just think something went wrong, their lane was not ganked, their team did not follow them around when they wanted, whatever, and then want to have attention... State clearly that you will mute them if they dont get thier shit together, instead of apologising and making them the centre of attention and most of them stop it and concentrate.

I don't think you have to apologize, just take the person's side in a pleasant way that says, "It sucks that that happened. Maybe they made a mistake, but it won't happen again. It will still be easy for us to turn this around. Do you need any help?"

I don't think you should ever tell someone that they're muted unless the game is already over.

1
Gorgondantess•

Never, ever tell someone you're muting them, and DEFINITELY don't threaten to mute them. Not to mention that that threat carries absolutely no weight.

1
pucklermuskau•

i see this a lot and have never agreed with it. i feel its better to tell them 'muted' once, and move on, rather than allow them to assume the communication channel is still open. its courtesy. the action itself certainly does carry weight!
