[video] Cristopher Hitchens talking about feminism in 1994 seems to be still relevant

I personally searched for his thoughts on the matter a few times and never found a satisfying answer (@edit2 Clarification: never talking only about feminism), i accidentally stumbled upon this video while watching random stand-up routines on youtube and could not resist to share. A lot that he points out seems to be the same we see today, the infantilizing of students in campuses, sexual objectification and how it's bad and that media can promote rape ( or fantasies of rape).

@edit I mispelled his name in the title, he is the now deceased Christopher Hitchens.

Interesting video, over 20 years of 3rd wave feminism and the ideas that were radical and a minority in 1994 have become dominant accepted tenants of feminism. There is a lot this video made me feel compelled to talk about so incoming wall of text.

Referring to the full video linked by OP. We have Naomi Wolf feminist author of "Fire with Fire", Katie Roiphe feminist author of "The Morning After, Sex Fear and Feminism on Campus", Rebecca Walker (from wikipedia, Walker first emerged as a prominent feminist in 1992 at age 22 when she wrote an article for Ms. titled "Becoming the Third Wave"), Tad Friend and Hitchens.

My personal take on the video is we have two 3rd wave feminists and Katie Roiphe, who in this video seems to agree more with based mom. Tad Friend who I am sure many would call a white knight. And my personal bias, good ol' Christopher Hitchens speaking truth as usual.

I think Naomi spoke more than any single person in this video. Again maybe it's my bias because I only wanted to hear Hitchens. Naomi was either created from the mold or is an early prototype that spouts the talking points we've all heard. I enjoyed what seemed like Katie giving some death stares at the two 3rd wave feminists who couldn't stop speaking over people and cutting them off, especially Katie.

Rebecca, who from what I could tell was born into 3rd wave, is exactly what I would expect of a 3rd wave feminist and for all I know she has been on stage next to Anita. She is quick to state and repeat that she's read Bell Hooks and Gloria Steinem. And nearly every statement she makes is followed by a statement that completely contradicts herself. Right from the start at 4:25 she states that there is no gender war and immediately says "but there is a war on women" then goes on to talk about the power imbalance between men and women, black and white people then gay and straight people. Sounds familiar, like intersectional feminism.

Naomi Wolf, fair to say classic 3rd wave. She states near the 9 minute mark she resents being called a "rape crisis feminist" but then goes on to claim in the next 30 seconds there is a rape crisis epidemic and a sexual assault epidemic. All throughout this video she contradicts herself.

Katie Roiphe, I don't know anything about her outside this video but during this talk she played the role of based mom. She seems to deny rape culture and is the only one who can or does really argue against Naomi and Rebecca as they push the 1 and 4 myth. She very clearly calls into question the validity of the study, but is ultimately ignored by Naomi.

I personally found it annoying to watch Naomi and Rebecca continually condescend and speak over everyone else, especially Hitchens.

23:33 - Naomi continues to make the point that feminists need to be fair, which I took to mean feminists need to be willing to take personal responsibility. But then she goes on to say that men need to lose status and money. I always find it interesting that the attitude is that someone needs to lose something. I take this to be the equality of outcome problem. Rather than it being enough to make sure women and minorities have equal opportunity to "become president or CEO" we need to take it away from people who have it now.

25:40 - Rebecca says "And there's no men's movement" as a problem. That's right folks a 3rd wave feminist in 1994 says that it's a problem there is no men's movement. You really can't win, no movement is a problem but MRA's are members of a misogynist hate group. Hitchens of course responds that it's on the way and men will be looking to share in the victimhood.

30:50 - Hitchens says he doesn't like being called a member of a group however goes on to say "I'm obviously in the category of straight white male person" to which Rebecca cannot resist the quip "That's not obvious" followed by her shit eating grin while staring next to his face. Funny they made a 3rd wave sandwich with Hitchens filling.

32:06 - Hitchens states "Without Testosterone, sorry to say none of us could be here." which is met with instant back lash from Rebecca denying it, 32:20 "Civilization is due to the push of Testosterone" makes her sick face. Basically misunderstanding what Hitchens is trying to say, which 3rd wave is happy to forget when they complain about CIS normativity, that humans are animals and animals must breed to move the species forward.

38:57 - One of my favorite moments from the talk when Hitchens says bluntly "Objectification is a stupid made up word" which of course makes Naomi laugh in response immediately. The thought that sexual objectification could be made up is a joke in her mind, I'm sure. Hitchens goes on to talk about "subjectification" while trying to point out that men do not in fact by default view women as mere objects.

50:30 - Surprising probably the most disgusting part of a talk about lorena bobbitt. Rebecca states "the reality that in survey after survey 51% of college men say they would rape a woman if they could get away with it." and "52% high school men say it's ok to rape a woman if she got him excited". Katie of course tries to disputes their social science and cleverly references a quote about 3 types of lies "lies, damn lies, and statistics". Naomi then shoots back, "that's not going to fly, you haven't read the sources". So basically, listen and believe darling.

51:18 - Naomi says women can most easily seek power through claims of victimhood but this should not be used to avoid acknowledging women are victimized. So basically both Naomi and Rebecca push in this talk that women are a victim class.

At one point in the talk rape fantasy is mentioned by Hitchens if I recall correctly, and Naomi immediately blames the existence of women's rape fantasy as a byproduct of media and if men had similar media targeted they would have similar fantasy of being taken. Funny, I think even in the 90s there were plenty of men fantasizing about being taken. Katie of course denies this claim. Noami also claims "no one's interested in expanding of legal definitions of rape of sexual assault" and brushes of Katie's claims to the contrary. Even though earlier in this talk they actually discussed affirmative consent. But to be fair to Naomi the contradictions of feminism are really hard to keep up with.

If not for the video quality and Hitchens' boyish good looks. This video could have been filmed yesterday. We hear the same studies, the same ideas from over 20 years ago everyday. In fact, the biggest change in this video were it firmed in today's climate is these people are actually too conservative. Naomi and Rebecca hold back and even talk about the fact that not all women are angels.

Eternally Based Hitchens, he states the real problem in this whole mess. The infantilization of people and not just, but especially now women.

This is unsettlingly current. Hitchens looks like a prophet when listening to this video. The campus culture of victimhood points were spot on.

media can promote rape ( or fantasies of rape).

Wonder when KiA will call him out for this one. My guess is never :)

If you took the time to watch the video, you would have seen that he clearly said that the idea that women only have rape fantasies, or fantasies of being ravished by a man, due to Hollywood glorifying it, is insulting to women.

It seems you misread OP's description - Hitchens is pointing out the infantilizing of campuses as a bad thing, he literally says objectification is a stupid word, then disputes the lady beside him who is saying that women only have rape fantasies because of Hollywood movies. If you're going to try to be a smug shit, at least be a correct smug shit.
