"Nice dude" yelling after me to respond to him, why you gotta be like that?

Hello Reddit. This might be more of a rant than anything constructive.

I work nights at a detox clinic in a downtown metropolitan area. Last night was absolutely beautiful and lots of people were out on the streets enjoying the night, so I figured I would go off location for my 12:30am break to get coffee.

En route back to work, and on a deadline to punch back in on time, I passed this man standing on the side walk going through his phone. He looked up and we made eye contact, he says: Hey what's up! I respond by nodding, and giving him a smile and half-wave.

As I walk past him, he starts yelling after me: I bet you hate that, right? When nice dudes try to talk to you, why can't you women say anything back ever?

He might have been drunk, but it was absolutely cringe worthy. Why you gotta be like that, strangers? You swear I did something to purposely insult him. Would anyone have handled this situation differently?
