Road bike riders: How long between punctures?

And what size are they? I'm thinking of getting a road bike or fixed gear but the last time i had one, all i seemed to be doing was puncture repairs. I had 700x23c tyres and i ride in London. Were they too small? Do i need to go bigger? Can i even go bigger?
