Suspect Bugs + Moving Out - how thorough to be?
I woke up today with six large bites in two clusters. Though this is the first time it's happened, I live in a building with known bedbug issues in the past, and since we're in the first few days of hot weather for the season I am assuming the worst. I am fortunate in that my situation is such that I can move myself out within a few days; I plan to do so, and spend the three months until my new lease begins with friends.
My question is this: how thorough should I be about moving/decontaminating my things, given that this is a new and therefore likely still quite small-scale infestation? Specifically, 1) do I need to do decontamination on all the clothes/items stored in my bedroom and closet? and 2) what about small-scale personal items stored in other rooms, like shoes or toiletries? I'm planning to pack everything I need to live for the summer, and want to be sure I don't bring anything with me. I've got good guides for what to do to items I do want to cleanse; just trying to figure out exactly what needs it.
Also, if I remove myself and my cat from the apartment, will the bugs continue to spread without us there? In other words, should I make it a priority to get my stuff out now, or can I leave it until I figure out a more permanent solution? And if I never obtain confirmation I was bitten, should I treat everything I own as potentially compromised, or can I safely focus on the bedroom and other large furniture?
As you can tell I'm freaking out a bit over a single incident, but I have had parasite issues in the past and I know how excruciating it is to get rid of them for good once they take hold. All advice on protecting myself and minimizing the risk of infestation/spreading appreciated.
