Is it possible to make videos like commentary's without being apart of an MCN (Multi-Channel Network)?

I'm worried about the issue of legalities, copy-right strikes, etc in the context of a commentary channel (as in video content that revolves around including clips of other people's videos and responding to them). Also, I want to avoid joining an MCN.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
