Is there and if so, what is the typical maximum throughput of the SFTP protocol?

Just curious what the maximum throughput of SFTP is, currently I'm seeing transfers top out at around 18-20Mbit, my connection is capable of 100Mbit so was thinking of switching to a different file transfer protocol unless there is anything I can do to improve transfer speeds.
