Is there a point to bonding?

As far as your mate goes, once you have all three big hearts, there seems no reason to continue with it, but even so with the other units, you get access to additional hearts when you hit A rank (or just your family... i can't figure it out). Is there any benefit to bothering to fill up these hearts?
