My SO and I want to know what we can afford/how to budget with our current income. general advice is appreciated as well.
Let's start at the beginning I guess. My girlfriend and I were making decent pay $10/$11 per hour but with our recreation habits weren't putting anything into savings and living paycheck to paycheck. We were living in Kansas at the time and moved to Oregon to live with my parents for (presumably) a year. we both found jobs out there relatively quickly and started saving. After 6 months of living there and after tax season we have just short of $3000 in the bank.
My parents plans for living there the rest of their life changed and so when they decided to move back to Kansas we moved back with them, again, assuming we were going to live with them for the rest of the year to save as much as we could like we planned.
we (all four of us) didn't have a place to move in right away so we (my girlfriend and I) are staying with my girlfriends sister's house and my mom and step-father are living with his parents in the mean time. 3 weeks of putting her sister out and finding out today the house still isn't going to be ready for another month we are thinking about finding our own place.
We have better paying jobs now she's making $12/hr and working at least 25 hours/week and after my 90 day probationary period at my new job i'll be making $11/hr 38-40 hours/week (I make $9 currently). We've never really budgeted before and don't want to go into a living situation where we're scraping by. our recreation habits have ceased and we are more focused on our future, i.e. buying a house, marriage, etc. but we don't really see the light at the end of the tunnel.
how can we plan and budget accordingly to not only get our own place but to save money while we are at it?
