Economic argument: Retirement Prospects

DISCUSSION

Hello CFers! I was crunching numbers this weekend and I discovered having children is economic suicide (no surprise here)!

It will cost my generation, the "Millennial" generation, north of $2.1 MM to retire in the US. I'm in my late twenties. That means at I will have to slug 25% of my salary to retirement or about $31 thousand per annum over 38 years assuming 3% rate of inflation.

Raising children in the US costs about $250 thousand per child over 18 years or $10,667 assuming 3% rate of inflation.

That means, given 20 years remaining until I retire, I would have to slug away $111 thousand per year at 3% rate of inflation to meet my objective of having $2.1 MM for retirement. Granted my illustration assumes my portfolio is only keeping up with inflation; however, the argument remains valid.

Mombies and Daddicts=Slavery to the system Childfree= Freedom as the moniker emphasizes
