Birth control while not sexually active

A girl I know that lives with me in the dorm told me a week ago that she didn't have sex for 6 month, which is fine I don't care. This afternoon she was panicked because she can't find her birth control pills!!! Is that a girl usually do even they are not sexually active or she was just lying to me?
