Habit Loops
Are patterns or paths our brains are used to walking down to get reward. Like the mouse in the puzzle going for a treat. Our brains have learned if it get's certain input it can get a reward. Your reward circuit is broken. We're going to fix that. We're going to war to overcome those auto pilot, self destructive habits.
During the war you are going to need some plans to escape habit loops. You want things that work for you. You need tools you can practice so that when the going gets tough you have a practiced habit loop to apply into your battle. To short circuit your old pattern. You should feel really good after you implement or practice your escape habit loop.
For me
-
If I get an urge. I might practice the surfer technique. I'll acknowledge hey there is an urge. Then I'll tell my self I used to be a guy that dealt with urges by following. I'm not that guy any more. Then I'll let it pass.
-
Some times a cold shower does the trick. I practice these daily.
-
Some times a bit of guitar practice.
-
Some times a deep book.
-
some times some focus exercises.
What are your personal escape plans. I've found early on it's best to have a minimum of 5 tools each one that works for you. That way if you have a bad day and one of the tools doesn't work you can throw a couple more on top of the urge.
So let's hear yours.
