[Other] Basically my response whenever someone asks "why don't you think ___ will do well?"
As a 4+ year veteran of box office news, I've seen my fair share of flops, disasters, surprises, and basically everything else. I know what the hell I'm talking about. I've been right, wrong, and everywhere in between. So when people ask me why I think movies aren't going to be successful and I end up being right such as;
-
The Lone Ranger
-
After Earth
-
White House Down
-
Sin City 2
-
Exodus: Gods and Kings
-
Terminator: Genisys
-
Fantastic Four
and so on and so on and so on
So basically, it comes down to this:
Movies don't start as hits and only fail for any particular reasons, a movie has to prove WHY people should go see it.
It's insanely easy to not see a movie. Not seeing something is the norm, but a movie has to convince someone WHY they should go out of their way, spend $20+ on tickets and snacks, drive to the theater and so on.
That's why I say films like Warcraft, Ghostbusters, and Assassin's Creed aren't going to do well, really. I don't think they do a good job of going to your average moviegoer who only sees maybe 5-10 releases a year and convince them to see it.
That's basically it.
