Why is the meta the way it is?

I was wondering this earlier. When did the whole Top lane, jungler, mid lane, adc and support meta become the thing?

Why not have like a support mid with the midlaner, so they can hold the lane while the midlaner roams? Why not have a support with the top laner and just have jungle camps be done when going back to lane?
