Difficulty Practicing

Does anybody else have difficulty practicing heroes? I find that the only times I can are when I'm in a 6-stack with friends who are more lenient to losses or are skilled enough to drag my useless self around. Otherwise I'll be trying to play a more difficult character like Genji or Widowmaker and just feel like a that guy everyone hates. So instead I'll play a hero I'm more used to, or is easier to use so that I'm not so useless.

TL;DR Either I try practice and have everyone berate you, or I always play something I'm used to.
