Commuting from Echo Park to UCLA

Starting a PhD at UCLA in the fall. Trying to balance out location with distance to campus. I'll probably have to be on campus five days a week.

Is it absolutely insane to live in Echo Park and commute to UCLA? Are there ways to campus that avoid (to some degree) the crazy traffic?

I could also live in Miracle Mile, which is much closer.
