Retrieving data from dead Galaxy S4

I have an S4 that died recently (battery began losing charge like no one's business then heated up while charging with different battery). Luckily most of its data was on an external SD card. I have contacts I'd like to retrieve still on the phone. It doesn't power on even with a fresh battery. Is there any way to access the phone without power?
