MIL wants us all to rent a 'family villa' for my honeymoon.
Obligatory long-time lurker, first-time poster note!
I have known my MIL since I was 13 years old and she has always been a handful. Fortunately for me, her one and only son (and my fiancé) takes absolutely no shit from anyone, especially her and has never even heard of the concept of apron strings.
Unfortunately, we are currently living in an awkward state of limbo as I had to take a job in MIL's town, but fiancé couldn't relocate as he is doing a masters in engineering at a college about 200 miles away. Because we are saving up to pay for our wedding and can't really afford to splash out on a second rent right now, MIL very kindly offered me her spare bedroom. So it is just me and MIL alone in her house, 5 days a week and then I run for my life back home on the weekends.
Living with MIL has been an experience to say the least and it seems to me that planning our wedding has tipped her over the edge. She had never previously made rude comments (to my face at least), but ever since being informed that we had gotten engaged and chosen a destination wedding, she has definitely shown me her true colors.
-
Initially, she seemed to be offended? and kept asking why we 'had done that' to her.
-
She then realized that the destination we have chosen is a tropical paradise and became totally overjoyed and would tell anyone who would listen about her vacation.
-
She came into my room and saw that I was looking at a cute little tea-length wedding dress online (beach wedding) and promptly made a real show of how ugly it was and forbade me from wearing it.
-
She showed me a dress that she liked, but it was very risqué; it had lots of cut-out, bare skin sections and a low cut top. I expressed that I wouldn't feel comfortable being quite so exposed in front of the family (especially Grandma!) and said that the slightest stumble looked like it would end with a dramatic boob flash. MIL said she didn't know what I was worried about because I didn't have anything to show anyway. (Not only was that really offensive, but I'm actually a natural 32F for anyone who cares, so I'm not sure where that came from).
-
After paying the deposit for our wedding company, MIL and her sister asked me to relocate the wedding to Vegas because they had never been and had decided they would like that better.
-
Fiancé had seen me eyeing a lovely blue, ribbon hair clip one weekend and surprised me by having it delivered to MIL's house. MIL opened my delivery and asked me why I'd bought the clip. I told her fiancé had surprised me with it because it matched my blue dress. MIL became hysterical and began yelling "your wedding dress is blue?!! YOU CAN'T WEAR BLUE, I'M WEARING BLUE! Not only did she know that I had not purchased a wedding dress, as she is invited to come shopping for it, but - well this is going to sound so bratty - I am the bride! If I wanted to wear a blue wedding dress then I will! And I want to note that she still has not bought an outfit, so I don't know where this "I am wearing blue" statement came from.
-
MIL had planned on booking a hotel room with her sister, but unfortunately said sister's dog became very ill and was uninsured. The vet bill came out as over $3,000 and now sister doesn't know if she can afford to come to the wedding. I am totally okay with this, that dog is like her baby and I was aiming for a no-stress, low-key, party on the beach theme with whoever felt like they could make it. MIL is not okay with this. She has taken it as some kind of sign that no-one will come to the wedding and has taken every opportunity since it happened to "joke" that everyone is going to drop out and she will be our only guest.
-
Fiancé's cousin and his wife have been having fertility problems for several years now and shared with the family that they will be needing IVF treatment. When cousin's wife received her invitation she was really excited for us and said she wouldn't miss our wedding for the world. MIL then decided to pipe up with, "Well what if you get pregnant? you won't be able to go on vacation then". I think that is possibly the only time in my life I have truly been lost for words.
-
And finally, the pièce de résistance in my humble opinion, MIL at some point realized that if her sister couldn't make it then she would have to book a hotel room and stay on her own. Ever since this epiphany, she has been strongly suggesting that we rent a family villa for me, her and fiancé to stay in. Yes folks, MIL has been attempting to strong-arm me into staying in the same accommodation as her on my wedding night and for the duration of my honeymoon. Now, I'm not shy and have tried to gently inform MIL of the reasons why this is a terrible idea, i.e. I am going to be relentlessly boning my brand new husband, in true marital consummation form, but MIL just pretends as if I haven't spoken and continues talking about how she saw a lovely 2 bedroom villa with its own pool online.
Now, normally I would just make that BEC face at fiancé to show my "deal with this" request; he has this magical tone of voice that actually works and makes MIL listen! However, I know that she has a tendency to have a melt down and if she were to throw me out, I would lose my job. I have no-where else to stay in this town and can't afford to rent somewhere on my own. So I've come here to you wonderful ladies, who know my pain, to commiserate. It has already been almost an entire year of living alone with MIL and thankfully my contract ends on June 30th. I just need to stick it out for one more month and then I'm going to start looking at blue, tea-length wedding dresses online ;)
P.S Any and all MIL naming suggestions are welcome!
