New player needs help with aggression, timing, speed, and planning
So I have never played a Total War game, even after having friends be big on the game since Rome I hit and despite being a fan of 4x, RTS, and all other associated genres imaginable since the first installments of Warcraft and Civ (yes, I don't know why I didn't try Total War either).
Warhammer though, oh yes, I love that universe, so I'm in. Take the Dwarfs, seem to be going pretty well. I have a couple of decent armies built up, confederating many holds, Grimgor is limited to one zone, and all is peachy. Then Archaon and The Apocalypse Boys show up in their tour buses and I get utterly wrecked. I can't even hope to stand up to even one of their stacks. Ungrim is still level 1 since I got Karak Kadrin last, and he's hemmed in by Talonghast the Never Fail Hero. So I decide to scrub that game, not worth the time, better to restart.
Empire is up next. I don't lose a single battle, but I cannot sway popular opinion in the other provinces. I beat back Mousillon from the border, the Dwarfs are contained, but I simply do not have the territory to build up my income. I have only just started to swing Middenland, Wissenland, and Tabalecland to my side when the Marauder armies swing in up top and start destroying everything in their path. Naturally my heroes do nothing, theirs do everything, and at this point I have to pause and assess just how and what I am doing.
I can't help but think that my diplomatic direction, buying the Elector Counts rather than conquering, hindered my ability to build up my income. I'm concerned about the aggression though, as well as the apparently severe impact of confederation upon a diplomacy in other areas.
I also feel like I keep slipping in building development. I try to push my income as best I can, but the limitation on minor settlements and the need for unique buildings in the majors is a balance I can't get a grasp on. I really wanted Volkmar, but the expense of maintaining and upgrading armies so I can have a few Cavalry and Artillery units made that a distant dream.
So what am I not getting here? Should I be more conquering master than placating diplomat? Should there be a much more aggressive push against the Chaos forces as soon as they raise their nasty little heads?
TL:DR; new player utterly stumped by the balance of income, diplomacy, and aggression. Also, bonus question, it seems impossible to manage corruption to a decent degree. This angers me.
