Since juvenile creatures will eventually be a thing, imagine this:

A small bone sharks luring a mother reaper away from her baby, while the rest of the pack hunts and kills the newborn.

Thus, one of the much more depressing aspects of nature works its magic... even though there's always the possibility that reapers are similar to some species of shark, and abandon their pups at birth.
