Increased chaos damage vs increased damage over time

When trying to shave off a few point on something like essence drain or caustic arrow, are % increases to these nodes essentially identical? Would 10% increased chaos damage = 10% increased DOT or is there another property im overlooking in these nodes that makes one superior to the other in degen builds?
