[Spoilers] You know what the Rebirth story reminds me of?
Grannt Morrison's Fantastic Four: 1, 2, 3, 4
From what I remember, that story featured Doctor Doom attempting to manipulate events in the Fantastic Four's lives in order to turn their story into a gritty, dark reality to point out how useless they are.
The story ended with a philosophical battle between Reed and Doom, using the family and their supporting cast as chess pieces to fight for their differing views on how the view their life events.
I always took Doom and Reed in this story as stand ins for Alan Moore and Morrison's different opinions on superhero stories, Moore dark and useless, Morrison bright and optimistic.
With Johns seemingly setting up the Watchmen universe as a dark entity infecting the mainstream DC Universe with a philosophical battle on the cards, I couldn't help but be reminded of this story.
Just felt it was worth bringing up since many people have compared the Rebirth special to feeling more like a Morrison book than a Johns one.
