Is it ever worth it to pledge to protect city states?

The way I see it, it's more trouble than it's worth. AI constantly tells me to back off, damaging relationships. If someone invades the city state, you have to help it or risk losing your influence with them. For a measly 5 extra influence?

What are your opinions? Especially in the early game.
