Why was 1980 such a good year for punk rock?
I'll start this by saying I'm not a frequent punk listener, though I am a huge fan of Nirvana (not really punk but whatever) and Iggy Pop. I always assumed punk "started" (there was Iggy Pop in the 70s of course but not much more than that) in the 90s or early 2000s. But Spotify's discover weekly gave me Los Angeles by X and the first Adolescents album this week, both of which came out in 1980 and both of which are fantastic. I was surprised that they came out so early, since they're so epitomic of the genre. Was there a reason the genre really came into its own that year?
