Turning off nether portal sounds

Generally I overwrite the portal.ogg in Minecraft with a blank, read-only file to stop that horrible cycling noise, so that I can build one inside my actual house. I can't find any trace of sound files in the LITW installation... where can I get at those? These noises drive me insane.
