Interesting findings with RAM XMP, and a question at the end
OK so, I currently have 32gb of RAM running at 3200MHz with no issues at all using the XMP in my BIOS. I am running the G.Skill Trident Z series of RAM, FYI. (Build info at bottom)
Prior to this I had ADATA XPG RAM, 16gb that was supposed to run at 2800MHz when overclocked. No matter what I did in BIOS, I couldn't make the ADATA RAM run at its advertised speeds. I tried using the XMP, and all kinds of manual setups not using XMP and pretty much anything I read online. Nothing ever worked. I would save and exit BIOS and get an error on restart, something like "Overclock has failed".
I don't know why, but when I turned on XMP with the new G.Skill RAM, it worked first try, no issues what-so-ever. No manual settings, just straight XMP. Of course before I turned on XMP it was at the factory max for my CPU, 2133MHz, but XMP has it running at 3200Mhz, no problem.
I just thought this was interesting, maybe it's an issue with the ADATA brand RAM? It ran fine other than not being able to overclock above 2133HMz at all.
Quick question, should I worry about the temperature of RAM running at 3200MHz? My case has great ventilation but I don't have one of those crazy RAM cooling fans, nor do I think I could fit one without some finagling.
Build is as follows: MOBO: MSI Z170 Gaming Pro Carbon CPU: Intel I7 6700k @ 4.0GHz CPU Cooler: Deepcool Captain 240mm liquid cooler RAM: 32gb @ 3200MHz GPU: AMD Radeon R9 Fury X
