Router Choice for Tomato (x-post from /r/HomeNetworking)
Looking to upgrade my router this summer. I've mostly settled on using a branch of Tomato firmware due to it's ease of use and monitoring features.
My main concerns for this router will be:
- ability to maintain high connection counts on the lan to wan(torrents)
- wired throughput (streaming hd video from plex)
- low latency for gaming
Most of the connections I care about are wired over ethernet, wireless is a lesser concern. I'm leaning towards one of the following routers based on reviews and speed comparisons on smallnetbuilder.com.
- ASUS Dual-Band Wireless-AC3100 Gigabit Router (RT-AC88U)
- ASUS Dual-Band Wireless-AC1750 Gigabit Router (RT-AC66U)
- NETGEAR Nighthawk X4S-AC2600 (R7800)
However, I can only see official tomato support (at least by shibby) for the AC66U. Does anyone have experience with the other two using tomato?
Are there other brands/models I should consider for this purpose?
I'm aware of other options like just using an old pc and pfsense, but i'm looking for something more straight forward and simple for the home network.
Thanks for your tips/advice!
