Question regarding editing files from Github.

Hello I am new to the whole Github scene. Traditionally, you would edit your html and css files and then upload to the server to make changes. But with Git, I am confused on how I would make these changes and then apply it to my website? From what I understand, cloning gets you the copy and forking allows you to get the copy and edit? Can someone please clear this up and help me regarding to this matter?
