Why does night mode only work on Android N now?

Just updated to the latest version, which looks and feels fantastic! However, I've noticed auto night mode only works on Android N now.

My Nexus 6P is on 6.0.1 and auto night mode worked perfectly before. It's a bit of a pain having to change it manually now!
