How does the game fit into the story?

I have been really enjoying the story that Blizzard has put out for Overwatch, but I don't really understand how the game fits into it.

I feel like that for each map there is supposed to be a set group of heroes on each team. And for that I wonder who those heroes are supposed to be.

Is there something I'm missing? Or some head-canon that you guys believe?
