Why does the community hate Lars?

Ever since I've started watching Steven Universe when it first aired I've seen the community just hate on Lars and I just don't understand where the fire comes from. Even discussing with some personal friends they just don't like Lars and can't give me a clear explanation as to why. He's been one of my favorite secondary characters outside of the crystal gems. I understand he has flaws like everyone else in the show does, but that doesn't make him outright evil or unlikable. So can someone care to give a good and clear reason why the fanbase hates Lars?
