Sister's Boyfriend Assaulted Her... Not Sure How To Proceed

So,

Last night at 3am my sister called me hysterically saying her boyfriend had beaten her up. My sister, her boyfriend, and their mutual friend were at his house (she lives with me and my mom normally) and they had been drinking a bit earlier, but no one was very drunk at all. Apparently he got it in his head that my sister was cheating on him with the mutual friend and started to get physical with both of them. He became enraged and couldn't be reasoned with and started to throw punches. The mutual friend tried to fight him off my sister, but couldn't stop him so he ran for help while he dragged my sister to the ground and continually wailed on her, bit and choked her to near death. She was able to pry herself free and ran to her car to leave (when she called me and I picked her up at a nearby gas station because she was too shaken to drive.

Once I got her back home we took detailed pictures documenting the injuries (facial abrasions, black eyes, deep bite marks) and had the police come to take a statement from both my sister and the mutual friend. Today though, I checked his mugshot and he was only charged with misdemeanor battery...

I am not sure how to proceed, his family is very well off and we are not, so we are worried he will get the best lawyers to make this disappear. Is there anyway we can go after him with felony aggravated battery or any charge that is heftier than misdemeanor battery? Do we contact a lawyer immediately?

PS This happened in Florida.
