Author's Note: this poem is in an experimental poetry form of my own invention, which for now I'm calling a “X-Poem” or “Braided Poem”. The rules are as follows:
-
At least 5 stanzas in length
-
Should juxtapose two opposing forces or ideas
-
Each stanza consists of only a single couplet
-
Each line-pair may be of any length, provided that...
-
The first foot of the first line must rhyme with the last foot of the second line, and…
-
The last foot of the first line must rhyme with the first foot of the second line. In this way, the poem has criss-crossing rhymes in each stanza.
-
The rhyming words in the first stanza must also appear in the last stanza.
This is, rather by design, a very restrictive and minimalist style of poem, rather like a haiku in many ways. If this does not appeal to you, I urge you to at least leave a comment telling me so and if you can, maybe a little about why. Negative feedback is encouraged. And if it does appeal to you, I want to know that also. I need to know early on what works and doesn't work for you about this format, because I can see it forming the foundation for a whole series of work down the road which may take years to explore. Thanks, OCP, you're the best!
