Yep it happens everywhere, it's called called go skateboarding day. Your local shop or skate association are good places to find out what events are coming up in your area. If you google Toronto go skateboarding day you should get plenty of pictures of previous years too.
In Vancouver it's not officially supported by the city, but it's patiently tolerated anyways. High five to the cops who were out blocking the side roads for us by the end of this years ride.
