This is what I was wondering as well. They're so cute and spikey.

Huh, funny enough I happen to know this one. Pretty sure they're Casuarina seed pods. They suck to step on.

these are "equisetifolia fruits" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Casuarina_equisetifolia

In laymans terms, Australian pine tree, can be found in all South east asia. Picked them up from road sides, boiled and added in tank. Shrimps seems to love them as it gathers lot of debris.

Looking mighty awesome.

Not sure how to say this don't want to be a downer but I read stories that betta and other fish got stuck in the openings or cracks of cholla wood and died...

Yeah, some bettas are smart enough not to do this, but some really love swimming in openings... My first fish swam down the bubble tube in his tank twice, after that I'm afraid to risk it. :(

Yes i saw these threads before adding Cholla wood. I have already filled one in the bottom and on right with substrate. Wood on left is hollow which I am going to remove once rotala grows couple of inches more, however just imagining my betta stuck in it makes me very nervous. maybe I will also fill this with substrate for safety. thanks for reminder

That is so pretty! Do you remember what plants you have in there? I have a 10 Gallons that is looking for smallish plants like yours.

Thanks~!

all plants from Tropica 1 - 2 grow (Cultured) in front I have Monte Carlo. Lilaeopsis brasiliensis on right. Staurogyne on left. Rotala (Bonsai) in the back. Substrate is GEX shrimp and plant soil which is excellent choice to maintain stable PH and I use 20g Fuval CO2 kit (with 16g cartridge from bike shops, lasts approx. 1 month each). all plants seems growing well this.

Nice! doesn't he attacks the shrimp?

Yeah, my question as well. I'm setting up a plant tank to rescue a betta from a tiny glass vase, but wanted so RCS in there.. My question was also are they gonna get eaten?

honestly I am not sure. it depends on fish. however RCS multiply like rabbits. best option will be to get RCS multiplying for a month and then add betta so he works more like population controller.

My betta is a cold blooded killer :(

Personally, I've found my betta got tired of eating ghost shrimp after a while. I wouldn't trust him or my dwarf frog with cherries but I've had a few berried ghosts hanging around (Have never seen babies though). Really it depends on the fish and the personality. Some bettas are chill and others are aspiring murderfish.

So far no attacks on shrimps, he is just busy exploring tank over and over. I kept him in hanging breeding container for couple of hours yesterday. Then added some shrimps with him. then some shrimplets. He didn't touch any for hours. When I fed him - this guy and shrimps were peacefully munching on pallets together in that container . After that -betta only kept trying to jump out of container and enter tank for some time. So I ended up releasing him in the tank.

So far all shrimps are rooming freely, not much hiding. Betta is just too busy discovering his favorite places. everythings lookign good so far. hope it stays.

Are you using co2 in there?

2
TestAndLearnOP•

Yea I am using Fuval 20g pressurised CO2 kit. It was the most suitable and Budget option I found for this small tank.

I have had 2 bettas and the both went on a rampage killing red cherry shrimps. They might not do it initially, but eventually when they get hungry/bored they will hunt them down.
