"How to Write a Poem"

Tercets. 8-feet lines. Accents. Catharsis.
Trying to put together new words i've learned. whose speaker is this?
asks the music lover to the waiting crowd.

7, Seven feet lines. Can't always get it like you plan every time.
Take all the lessons. Apply all the tasks. Night moves. By Bob Seger.
Deutscher Fussball-Bundi broke their curse. Answering trivia, too.

Lucky that my boyfriend is loving and kind. What a lucky friend to find.
engagement in my five-year-plan. she said a ring will look good with my tan.
Compassion lingers like warm ocean spray. That is the catharsis.

Read Schooner Flight by Derek Wallcot if you want to learn how to write about writing a poem/the importance of poetry. This piece is really to basic for me to consider it poetry. I've written many similar things but when I come back to them it always just seems to much "face value" into the poem. Like there's nothing else to it, I can see that your trying and the water allegory for catharisis was the only real piece of poetry I could see here that had depth beyond the line. You're binding yourself to much by thinking there's a magic formula you can already plug your words and ideas into. I'm reading this more as an attempt as clever word play. You messed up the image set up in the last stanza with "boyfriend" and "she". It just sounds like you're filling lines instead of filling an idea with words.

Thank you for the recommendation. I am going to give it a read right now... Well, I finished ?section? 3, and I had to come back to this tab to say thanks again. I'm not sure if section was the right word... Anywho, I am going to finish it! Intriguing story, and I cannot wait to read what happens.

I totally agree with the things you have pointed out about my poem. I am pretty proud of it, because I know it's the first step of many. I'm super excited that you caught that catharsis allegory!

Keep writing! and if you can keep doing things like the close you're well on your way to a lot of good words.

Lucky that my boyfriend is loving and kind. What a lucky friend to find.

Try to avoid repeating words like 'lucky' unless you are doing so to create a particular effect.

More generally, the key to good poetry (as far as I am concerned) is that the medium should serve the message and not vice versa. Rhyme schemes, fixed line patterns and all that are only of value if they result in a work which conveys the message or sentiment you are trying to convey in a pleasing way. Too much concentration on them and the reader sees the clever poetry and misses the message.

I honestly did not realize I used lucky twice. Thanks for pointing that out!

I definitely agree with the sentiment that substance and structure both need to find symbiosis to be successful. I am planning a new poem using both that I think will do that a lot better. This poem was more of a journal, it means things to me, and only me. I hope I'll be a better storyteller in the next one, and I think this comment has pointed me in that direction.

Thank you! Any clue how to change the tag on this post to "Feedback Received"?

It happens automagically, once feedback has been posted. :)

I always assumed the ability to write poetry was something that some people just naturally had. Which is why I never did it lol.
