Other Options if You Don't Want to Sell a Phone
I just wanted to point out that you do NOT have to sell the subsidized device to get back on contract and avoid the price hikes. All you have to do is order a subsidized phone online using your UDP line's upgrade, wait for it to ship to renew your contract, then destroy the toxic SIM card without turning on the subsidized phone or plugging it in.
After that, you can never put the subsidized device on the UDP line whose upgrade was used to purchase it (unless you change your UDP line's phone number after the phone ships). But you can activate the subsidized phone on ANY OTHER VERIZON LINE OR ANY OTHER CARRIER'S LINE and you will not lose UDP.
What that means is that after you destroy the toxic SIM card you can:
-
trade your subsidized phone with someone else who will give you their phone in exchange for your subsidized phone;
-
throw the subsidized phone in the trash;
-
give the subsidized phone to a friend/relative/charity/stranger;
-
pawn it;
-
recycle the subsidized phone;
-
trade the subsidized phone in to Verizon for a Verizon gift card that you can use to pay your Verizon phone bill;
-
trade the subsidized phone in to Best Buy for a Best Buy gift card;
-
if it is an iPhone, trade the subsidized phone in to Apple for an Apple Store gift card;
-
trade the subsidized phone into Gazelle or Orchard for cash; or
-
drain the subsidized phone's battery over and over again until it no longer holds a charge, return it to the manufacturer for a warranty replacement and then use the warranty replacement on your UDP line.
The point is that all you need to do to avoid the price hikes is get back on contract. And to keep UDP all you have to do is remove the toxic SIM card w/o plugging in or turning on the subsidized phone and NEVER put the subsidized device on the UDP line whose upgrade was used to purchase it (unless you change the phone number on the UDP line after the subsidized phone ships).
So if selling a phone is too much of a hassle for you, then recycle the subsidized phone or give it away to a charity. It doesn't matter what you do with it as long as you don't put it on the UDP line whose upgrade was used to purchase it.
The 16GB iPhone SE is $1 from best buy online right now, free shipping. So all you would need to spend is $1 to get back on contract and avoid the price hikes. And you could give a friend/relative a very nice phone. You don't have to sell it. I am not 100% sure whether or not you get charged the $40 upgrade fee, but I don't think you do. Even if you do, you would save that much in 2 months by avoiding the price hikes.
But if you do want to sell a 16GB iPSE, the last Verizon 16GB iPSE (opened with its SIM card removed) sold for $375 on swappa and it sold within 4 hours of being listed:
https://swappa.com/listing/NUU932/view
After shipping with insurance, swappa/paypal fees, you should net at least $325 at that sale price. There are several iPhone buyers on swappa who buy iPhones to ship overseas. They subscribe to the swappa threads and as soon as a brand new iPhone gets listed, they offer to buy them. They ship them overseas where the demand for these devices is high.
MAKE SURE YOU PUT IN THE LISTING THAT THE PHONE DOES NOT COME WITH A SIM CARD IN IT. The reason being is that some buyers are so stupid that they don't realize you can get a SIM card for free from Verizon and will give you bad feedback if the phone doesn't have a SIM card in it when they receive it.
My preference is to get rid of these subsidized phones and never activate them on your account so that you never accidentally put one on the UDP line whose upgrade was used to purchase it and lose UDP. I sell mine but there is no need to sell them; you can give them away.
Please don't throw them in the trash, that was a joke. At least recycle them.
