When your lover says it to you

behind a closed door

he uses the word

Love

When your lover makes it to you

behind a closed door

he performs it

Love

When your lover won't say it

in public, and

when your lover belittles it

for being said often to your children, and

when your lover won't feel it

for your children, and

when your lover says it's his right

because of baggage that is private

he withholds it

Love

When your lover loves another, and

another,and

Another, and

when your lover says he hasn't

but he has

just under cover, and

when your lover covers lovers

with a neat white sheet, and

he tells you not to lift it, and

you tell him he's a cheat, and

he blames you, and

he hates you for besting his best ruse, and

when he lies to cover lies, and

you can't imagine truth, and

when he fumbles and he rumbles, and

he slathers you with shame, and

although you try the high road

it only makes you lame

Because without a leg to stand on climbing up cannot be done

so you crawl along the low road, and

behold

the smoking gun, and

you throw it on the sheet, and

ask if you're the only one, and

your lover then regards you with distaste and with disdain, and

he tells you that you're lowly, and

his trust is now decaying, and

he tells you that he want to beat you for your words are all too loud, and

he locks you out at 3 AM, and

treats you poorly to cover his own shame, and

he says that you mean nothing, and

that you're alone to blame, and

he shirks you, and

he shuns you, and

he says that you are not worth staying, and

he later says he loves you

your sweet lover

whom you love

he ruins it, he refuses it, he reviles at it

Love

When you tell him that you love him, and

he tells you he needs space, and

when you snuggle in so close at night, and

his phone turns from your face, and

when you deliver lunch to his desk, and

he hides all active panes

you are looking at a window, and

you cannot see the rain

so you say it, and

you mean it, and

you act it, and you try

but he does not know its meaning, and

his well for love is dry.
