Thinking about getting into Witcher 3

I've never played any of the Witcher games, and I've seen a ton of good things about Witcher 3. I'm just wondering if I can enjoy this one without playing the previous entries and not lose any enjoyment without a back story.

This is all you need to get started: Newcomer's Guide.

There are downloadable PDF versions in the comments. Just sort by "top".

Just done it myself, can honestly say doesn't detract at all. A few times I've Googled something to find out some back story but that's my own curiosity rather than a need.

Honestly...do it, amazing game that's kept me going for hours

I play it without any previous witcher experience and still thoroughly enjoyed the game.

Just do it. Never played Witcher 1 and 2 and W3 was one of my best gaming expierences in 2015 and the best RPG I played since Gothic 2.

I played it without playing the previous games. It gives you enough backstory in the opening sequences to follow what's going on.

I'm literally doing the same as you, except I've been playing it now for maybe 8 hours or so.

If you pay attention to what you're given in the first few hours you get a rough idea of the previous games, a quick google search will also fill you in pretty easily but you will be able to enjoy it 100% going in fresh.

You can absolutely play it without any previous knowledge. In some cases you might need to read the character entries, but it's not too complicated. If you feel like you are a bit lost in the lore, the witcher wiki helps and also the witcher lore series on youtube can give you a bit better background, but that's really optional.

It's absolutely enjoyable without the previous games. It does a great job of getting you up to speed. However, this game has its hooks in me so deep that I've now bought all the books, and got Witcher 1 and 2 on sale from GoG.

Currently am playing without having played 1 and 2. Yes you can enjoy it immensely. They do a good job of explaining past events enough that you don't get lost. It is one of the best video games I have ever played.

Do it! I played a little of witcher 2 and was turned off by the controls and never really got into the story.

I got witcher 3 a couple weeks ago and all the DLC. It's by far the best fantasy open world game ive played probly ever. And I've been playing elder scrolls games since Arena. The story and characters are awesome. The game play is fun and not super easy as some games are. Its great fun.

I bought it on sale on ps4 the other day and I don't regret the decision at all. I've played 2nd iteration before and it certainly helps for knowing some of the backstory between characters but everything is well explained for newcomers.

Honestly, it's amazing. The sheer amount of detail that is put into everything is incredible considering the size of the game.

The combat is difficult at first, but I would recommend you really look into each monster through the bestiary and prepare accordingly if you are struggling.

100% do not need to play other ones. It stands on it's own, and is the best rpg I've played. I lose so many hours in it just doing side quests like in Skyrim, and they are really deep quests that feel so grand, they don't feel like side quests.
