New Headset, sound works fine but mic "not plugged in!" Ideas?

I've recently bought a new headset - A Gioteck hc2. It uses a 3.5mm jack and once plugged in, the sound works just fine. However, my laptop uses the inbuilt mic instead, which has horrendous background noise and the quality is fecal.

When I look at the recording devices, it states that the "Headset Mic" is not "plugged in." My audio drivers are all up to date. Any ideas?
