Any fellow fourth years scared/Not-Confident about their choice of Specialty?
I'll be honest. I am completely terrified that I may be choosing a specialty that I may grow to hate or be completely bored of in the next 5-10 years. Objectively, I've done well in medical school and have STEP scores that would make me competitive in most to all specialties. I am applying in EM because I loved the pace, the ability to do some procedures, the people, pay is not bad, etc,. I just finished rotating in it, and enjoyed myself for the most part but still walked away feeling largely unimpressed. Unlike a lot of my classmates, I could easily see myself doing one of several other specialties: Gas, Rads, even IM all immediately come to mind. I have just never been enamored with any one thing in particular. And now with all the work I've put in over the last couple of months, I feel almost trapped in my decision and am still constantly contemplating what ifs. When you think about it objectively, it's ridiculous that we have to make a decision for the rest of our lives after only 1 year of clinical exposure. Fuck man, this shit is tough. S/O to my fellow M4s on the ERAS grind
