Need help with a resurrection quest!
Hi all!
Let me outline the situation.
I'm a newbie DM, started about a month ago with Lost Mines of Phandelver and 5e. My group is highly receptive and great fun, and with it still being the holidays from Uni and College, I've been putting lots of prep time in and making sure they're having fun. I've told them that, while we'll progress to other modules/homebrew, Phandelver is our trial period and if they wanna change characters but keep their equipment and "personality", as it were, they can.
Last session, the fifth altogether, one of my players comes in and tells me that he's made a new character and, once we get back to Phandalin and the Manor (which they've claimed for themselves), he'll leave him behind and introduce the new one. I was like: cool, no worries. Scratch that, we're introducing a new player to the group anyway and I've already planned how to get him in in a cool way, so I'll just slot you in alongside him.
The party arrives at Thundertree, encounters the dragon and sees the two new adventurers, stark naked and beat up, suspended in the tower. When fighting breaks out, Kato, the old character, is insta-killed by Venomfang. The player is a little surprised, but not all too fussed considering how lucky he was that he'd just rolled up a new character anyway.
So, with Kato dead, our dwarven Barbarian, Tordek, goes into a rage as their backstories were closely linked. The dragon ends up getting chased away, and the party makes their way back to Phandalin. Tordek is torn up about his best friend's death, and carries his body with him all the way back to the Manor to bury him. It was Kato's idea to retrieve the family heirloom from Thundertree too, so Tordek buried it alongside Kato. I'm not doing the story justice but it had not only me on the verge of tears, but my girlfriend too.
The new player whom we'd just introduced was playing your typical Sage-y very smart Wizard. The Wizard tells Tordek that, while we can't afford a true resurrection, there's a Raise Dead spell that works as long as the person isn't dead for longer than 10 days. They visit the Shrine of Luck and Sister Graele tells them that she can't help them, but surely in the nearby metropolis of Neverwinter there'll be someone that could help them. I work it out and tell them that they'll have less than three days in Neverwinter to find someone who could bring back Kato. We ended the session there as we'd been playing nearly 8 hours already and I know almost nothing about Neverwinter.
I've been reading Volo's Guide to the North and the 4E Campaign Setting so I'm pretty clued up about NW now, but I have no idea how to handle the resurrection. I'm gonna use Matt Mercer's resurrection mechanics to make the actual act more dramatic, but I also want to add some more tension to the ordeal by, ideally, stretching it out over a couple of days. I know I could just have the spellcaster ask them to clear out a nearby lair of scum and villainy, but it just doesn't seem right.
Any idea how I could make this quest (and their foray into Neverwinter) truly memorable?
Thanks in advance B-)
