A note to all regarding the new players coming from NMS...
I have a quick story to tell, and I don't think I can summarize it properly in a TL:DR and have the same impact, so gather around kids, it's story time.
I picked up elite before the first expansion around summer time, and jumped in with no friends to play. the game looked cool and I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I played some basic tutorials and then hopped into solo play to undock and make sure I knew what I was doing.
Immediately after I flew around for a few hours, I started to think I was getting bored, and figured that perhaps i'd get a bit of fun out of open play. The first encounter I had in open play was a CMDR who I will leave unnamed for the time being (not sure if he'd like to be named and we haven't spoken in a while), who ended up essentially playing charades as I was about to undock, playing with his lights/hardpoints/landing gear. I thought this was hilarious, and immediately winged up with him. The only thing that made me stick around and want to play this game and learn about the universe was the more experienced pilot who was showing me around and having fun in our starter system.
It's been over a year now, and I'm still playing strong. This game is amazing, but it has a VERY steep learning curve. CMDRs, If you have any extra time, go hang out with some new players. Most probably won't know how to use comms yet, but just try and be there, because there's a very good chance you're going to make their day. don't go dropping tons of money for them or spoiling the game in any way, just be a friend they can hop on comms and chill and have a beer with (if they're >18. Please don't tell children to raid their parents' liquor cabinets.)
There are a lot of players joining the game we all love now, most of which are feeling burned from No man's sky. What we need now is to show them that our community is willing to step in and be more than just the drama they will see in the reviews.
Thanks for your time, and I hope the community continues to be amazing as it is right now. Fly safe CMDRs.
